Merger Photo Preview

1. The fence behind the girls doesn't stretch all the way across the frame, the girls are positioned oddly, there is a weird line that looks like a hose running across the field in-between the girls, and the shadows of the girls don't line up at all.

2. I think a good place to take these kinds of photos would be a wide field or somewhere with a really simple background.

3. Something creative we could do would to have a person doing some sort of action in a sequence or have an object put in a different place each time you take a picture.

4. If you wore a dark color, it might help out with the photo shoot.

HDR Photography Preview

1. You will need to take several pictures by manipulating different shutter speeds and put the pictures together after you've shot all of them.

2. In order to take this kind of picture, you will need a camera, tripod, and HDR photo-blending software.

3. People would take an HDR photo if the scene they're shooting has blown-out highlights and flat shadows. The HDR technique would fix all of these problems.

4. Once we merge the photos, we can expect to see more of a clarity to the photos and much more detail that would've been lost without the HDR technique.

A. The differences between a hard news story and an opinion story is that one is hard facts and the other is just what someone thinks. The hard news probably contains statistics and specific data for a topic, and the opinions one just has quotes on what other people think. Not only do opinion stories not have specific statistics, but they most likely aren't supported by any important companies.

B. There probably aren't very many pictures because the the authors wanted to support their own opinion with a picture of their own. It's hard to come up with a picture to support your opinion.

C. Politics, School issues, and Trending topics

Student of the Month Story

Who: James Heckler
What: Student of the Month Award
When: April 13, 2017
Where: James Bowie High School
Why: To recognize and honor a student
How: Getting good grades and working hard

James Heckler was chosen as the Student of the Month on April 13, 2017. He represented James Bowie High School as an honor role student with great grades. He is recognized by his teachers and students around him as a hardworking, intelligent student.
Heckler has done a lot for his community and serves as a great influence for other students. He was "honored to be in this position" and wants people to know that if you work hard, you can do anything you put your mind to.

Heckler still respects other students even though he was chosen as the Student of the Month.

"I don't worry about anyone else when I'm shooting for high grades, but I'm pretty sure there are more people out there who are more qualified than I am for this position," Heckler says.

People around the school appreciate all Heckler has done.

"He really tries to do the best he can for the school, and everyone around here knows him because he's so involved," leadership president Maria Cacho says.

Heckler looks up to his grandfather and strives to be like him.

"My grandfather is my role model because he was a helicopter pilot, similar to what I want to be," Heckler says. "I enjoy being around and learning from him."

Heckler doesn't really worry about how other people see him.

"I'm not worried about how other people perceive me," Heckler says. "I would hope that people think that I'm a nice, genuine person and that I work hard for what I want."

Heckler's teachers are very proud of his achievements and behavior in class.

"I really enjoy having James in my class," Ms. Jamie Parsons, a biology teacher at Bowie, says. "He treats everyone he knows with respect and I can count on him to be an example for the class."

Many colleges look for the academic performance Heckler turns in.

"Of course I want to go to college," Heckler says. "I have motivated myself to do well and get good grades so I can create a future for myself and live up to my own expectations."

Nut Graf

A nut graf is the paragraph of a story that answers anything that wasn't answered in the intro. The nut graf creates an intro for the story and introduces what is about to be covered. The term refers to information being put "in a nutshell" to summarize a certain story or context in just a few sentences. A good nut graf answers the who, what, when, where, why, and how of a story as quickly as possible to get it out of the way.

A nut graf is important because it easily justifies the main point of the story, and it helps motivate readers to keep reading. It also helps transition a story from the intro into the main body. If not all the information is summed up in the nut graf, it will leave necessary information out and random information might be inserted in later, leaving the reader confused and off track.

Sports Portfolio Evaluation

Runner-ups

a. Alyssa Schukar
b. Overall pictures of an eating disorder journey
c. Dislikes - all pictures of a certain distance, pictures too similar, not enough strong singles
d. Likes - good graphics on some pictures, good story telling
e. Like the judges said, it was an overall "downer" collection, but I got the feeling she liked to take good, deep photos with a lot of meaning.

a. Sam Adams
b. Overall pictures of outdoor activities
c. Dislikes - composition of helicopter photo, some photos need more action, telephone lines in shot
d. Likes - photos have a nice clean look, good sense of mood
e. I think this photographer was trying to get a good variety from where he was shooting, so I like how he was being adventurous and creative with his photos.

a. Carlos Delgado
b. Overall pictures of camping activities
c. Dislikes - "no consideration for backgrounds," too heavy on curves and levels, needs better surroundings with no clutter
d. Likes - good content, good effort
e. I think this photographer took photos that looked mainly rushed and didn't take their time to lay out what they wanted to shoot. Their pictures looked more spontaneous than any of the other people.

a. Daryl Peveto
b. Overall pictures of trips
c. Dislikes - cluttered backgrounds, no reason for photo, no connection between caption and photo
d. Likes - like the balance of color, nice compositions
e. Overall, I think this person was a little too messy with their composition, but I really liked the pictures where he put the end of a wall between the two scenes on either side of it.

Winning Portfolio:

Dustin Snipes -
a. As the judges critiqued his photos, they mentioned that everyone was doing something in the photos (which they liked), and they liked that he gave out his own personality based on what photos he took ("I like this person").
b. I loved the composition that Snipes had, and all of his pictures were clean and cropped well. The judges mentioned a few negative comments such as how they wish some of his photos could start from a lower angle, or they weren't sure about a few items used, but overall, they were very impressed with the outcome.

Contest Recap:

a. One by one, the judges went through the portfolios and named the strong and weak points. If there were too many weak points, the collection is forgotten about and they move on. They came down to two good ones and said they were "comparing apples to oranges because of the two completely different photo topics. They chose the one with the most good photos and least amount of bad comments.

Individual Images:

a. I agree with the judges who liked the sumo wrestler photo. I liked the way it was cropped, just like they said, and it was well balanced. I also really liked the lady's expression which was probably hard to capture.
b. I disagree with the judges on the basketball photo in video 6. They didn't like how the photographer was standing up, but I kind of like it. They said you would usually crouch when you're at a basketball game, but I think the angle he got it at captured the player's expression nicely.

Architecture Preview #1

Habitat 67, Canada

1. It was built by Israeli/Canadian architect Moshe Safdie
2. It was built in 1967
3. It is located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada
4. You are able to visit it because it is considered a model community and housing complex
5. The cost of the building was about 140,000 Canadian dollars, but the federal government financed most of it
6. Safdie needed something to present at the world fair in 1967
7. I chose this building as one of my favorites because I love the way the rooms are unevenly stacked on top of each other. They almost look like they're floating in mid air. They look like they are all different shapes and sizes, but based on the article I read, they are all identical in size. I learned that the buildings stack up to 12 stories high, and they are housing complexes which I think would be really fun to live in.

 Kunsthaus Graz, Austria

1. It was built by Peter Cook
2. It was built in 2003
3. It is located in Graz, Austria
4. Most people just visit it from afar like a piece of art, but some can get a bit closer if they want to pay entrance fees
5. There wasn't a specific price, but an article I read said that it had a "much lower cost than what would be assumed" due to its conventional detailing
6. It was built for the European Capital of Culture celebrations
7. I chose this building as one of my favorites because what caught my eye was that, from a distance, the top of it made it look like a giant slug. The whole building looks like a creature from out of this world, and I love the extra features on top that give it extra detail and a nice looking texture. I read an article about how the building lights up at night, and I think that is a good feature to have if you want to attract visitors

 Turning Torso, Sweden

1. It was built by Santiago Calatrava
2. Construction started in 2001 and it officially opened on August 27, 2005
3. It is located in Malmo, Sweden
4. People live in its 147 apartments
5. I could not find how much it cost
6. There is no specific reason why it was built, but it is regarded as the first twisted skyscraper in the world, and it won a few awards
7. I chose this building as one of my favorites because I was drawn to the nice, clean finish of it. It looks very modern and kind of relaxing to look at. I love the natural curve of the building and that it seems to have windows in perfect rows and columns across the sides. It is the tallest building in Scandinavia and I admire the work that was put into it.

Cubic Houses, Netherlands

1. It was built by Piet Blom
2. The first ones were constructed in 1974 and 1977
3. It is located in Rotterdam and Helmond in the Netherlands
4. They are houses consisting of 3 stories
5. I don't know how much it cost to make them, but the architect sometimes puts one up for sale starting at 140,000 Canadian dollars
6. The architect based the buildings around the concept of "living as an urban roof"
7. I chose these buildings as one of my favorites because of the ability it has to mess with your perception of what is up and down. From the outside, you see it as a tilted cube with oddly placed windows. I could only imagine that it would be weird stepping in to the house for the first time only to find out that it more or less looks like a normal house on the inside.

Krzywy Domek, Poland

1. It was built by Szotynscy and Zaleski
2. It was built in 2004
3. It is located in Sopot, Poland
4. You are able to visit it because it is a part of the Rezydent shopping center
5. I didn't find anything on the cost
6. The architects were inspired to build it based on fairytale illustrations from Jan Marcin Szancer
7. I chose this building as one of my favorites because the color schemes are what caught my eye besides the wonky way it is built. The place looks kind of eerie at first like it could be a haunted mansion, but then when you see all of the bright colors hidden here and there, you might think of it as a play house for kids or just a place to have fun. I love the way the building looks like it's collapsing on itself, but is fighting to stay upright.

Sensory Overload

1. I agree with the quote because I think people have certain interests that they want to decorate their house with. As an aspiring photographer, I realize that I am able to have my own photography style, and I have a specific kind that I like.

2. When I looked through the images, I definitely felt like taking my camera for a photo shoot. All the bright colors and shelves of toys would make for a good composition.

3. If I were the child of someone who worked at a place like that, I think I would be very happy because my parent would be able to make all of my toys. However, I think the parent would be very busy all the time and may not always have time to play.

4. My favorite photo has a bunch of Christmas toys in it and lots of red color. There is also a lot of horse and animal toys. There is a big Santa playing the saxophone on the right hand side and three girls working the desk. Two of the girls have their heads down on the table and the third girl is on her phone.

Newspaper Design Intro

1. My favorite newspaper front page is the Staten Island Advance from New York. I like this front page because it has a big, intricate picture on the front that really captures your attention. It has lots of leading lines inside of other lines, which makes it fun to look at.

2. My favorite headline from the newspaper is "NYPD expands 'Too Good for Drugs'" because when I see something involving what the police have to say, I instinctively think it's important and want to listen up. I read the story, and it was a warning about consuming drugs, which I think is an important topic to discuss.

3. There are three stories on the front of my favorite newspaper cover.

4. Most of the newspapers have one main picture that catches your eye the most, and the titles of the stories to go with them are very big and bold. Each paragraph/section is in a neat space or column which gives the whole front a nice, professional look. The title of the newspaper tends to be on the top.

5. Some differences between the newspapers include the location of the main picture, the font for headlines, and the arrangement of paragraphs. The color schemes are also different, and it depends on how many stories they have that determines how many pictures there are.

(A1) The varsity cheerleaders had the opportunity to a prestigious competition in Orlando, Florida. They have had a very successful season, but there have been a few things that have caused them to change their routine repeatedly, such as their main flyer getting injured. All of the cheerleaders are excited for the big opportunity, and they have worked hard to get this far. This season has brought them some trouble, but they have also had the chance to bond more and be a second family.

Who: Varsity cheerleaders
What: Nationals competition
When: February 10
Where: Orlando, Florida
Why: The team qualified to compete
How: The team was successful in all other competitions
Who was quoted: Bridget Alvarez, Amie Roggemann, Tanya Zint,
Strongest quote: "There's two rounds, Preliminaries and Finals, and they have not made it to Finals before, so our goal this year and what we want to accomplish is making it to that next round." - Coach Amie Roggemann. I think this quote was the strongest because it explained how the competition worked and explained the cheerleaders' goals. (Found in 7th paragraph)
Lead sentence: I thought the leading sentence was very captivating and motivating, which made me want to read more.

(A7) There is being a debate on whether or not high school love is real. People have different opinions on this topic, but overall, people seem to agree that true high school love is at least possible. Austyn Keelty wrote a story about the science behind love, and how it affects your body. Most teenagers have to deal with raging hormones, but some people are capable of wanting and maintaining a real relationship.

Who: High-schoolers in love
What: Are high school students capable of love?
When: January
Where: Bowie high school
Why: To test if relationships are genuine
How: Look at the science behind love
Who was quoted: Victor Santangelo, Tank Rolan, Jimmy Counihan, Jonathan Hollevoet, Alejandro Garcia
Strongest quote: "Probably 95% of the time, 'no.' People think that they found their soul-mate?Really? No." - Alejandro Garcia I think that this quote is the strongest because it came from an adult that has been through high school already and he has more experience on the topic. (Found on bottom on the far right of page A7)
Lead sentence: Yes, the lead sentence was interesting and I wanted to know more.

(A8) People in high school who do high level gymnastics are very weighed down with all the things they have to do outside of it. Kate Stubbs especially has it hard trying to balance her rough schedule. Many gymnasts have to go to practice at least 5 hours a day, and on top of that, they have to have time to do school work and other things they enjoy. If people love the sport, they'll be willing to sacrifice a lot.

Who: Student gymnasts
What: Balancing school and gymnastics
When: Gymnastic season
Where: Outside of school at a gym
Why: People love the sport and don't want to give it up
How: Kate's mom says that she has seen a change in organization in her daughter since she joined
Who was quoted:Kate Stubbs, Coach Rachel Scarbrough, Nayna Pashilkar, Alison Stubbs
Strongest quote: "Gaining confidence is important, and there are a lot of mental factors to work through when you are a high level gymnast." - Coach Rachel Scarbrough I think this is the strongest quote because the coach is showing that she understands her students and wants the best for them. (Found in 5th paragraph)
Lead sentence: I was definitely pulled in with the first sentence because it started out with action.

Photography:
*Did not have any B pages

(A1)
1. The photo of Jordan Haschke shows good lighting, even if it's dark outside. Also, the photo is showing what the article talked about, which is them cheering on their team and wanting to place in their upcoming competition.
2. I see simplicity and depth of field in this photo.
3. The main subject is Jordan Haschke.
4. The photo does seem to be exposed properly.
5. There is a deep depth of field because you can see all the way to the other side of the stadium.

(A2)
1. The photo of teacher Marco Bazan was the teacher of the year, and the photo shows him in a classroom, smiling. Getting him in a picture where he's smiling really helps justify why he would be the teacher of the year because he looks friendly and looks like he connects with his students.
2. I see the rule of thirds in this photo.
3. The main subject is Mr. Bazan
4. The photo does seem to be exposed properly.
5. There is a shallow depth of field because you can't see past the white board.

(A7)
1. The photo shows how people want to make a stand for women's rights. The march took place at the Capital, and it had a huge impact on people and they came together as a community.
2. I see the rule of thirds and mergers in this photo.
3. The main subject is a protester in a mask, holding the sign, "On behalf of my gender, I apologize."
4. The photo does seem to be exposed properly.
5. There is a shallow depth of field because the protesters are standing directly in front of a wall.

(A8)
1. The photo shows Kate Stubbs doing difficult exercises on the balance beam. It is the biggest picture on the page, so it has a lot of impact on the whole story.
2. I see lines and depth of field in this photo.
3. The main subject is Kate Stubbs doing a back handspring on the beam.
4. The photo does seem to be exposed properly, but it's a bit blurry at some points.
5. There is a deeper depth of field because you can see the wall and other equipment in the background.

(A8)
1. This photo shows Kate Stubbs in a one-legged relevé, completing her floor routine. This is not one of the main photos of the story, but it shows a huge part in the whole routine which people need to know about.
2. I see simplicity and a bit of rule of thirds in this photo.
3. The main subject is Kate Stubbs doing part of her floor routine.
4. The photo is exposed properly, but I think it could've used a tiny bit more light.
5. There is a medium to shallow depth of field because there's a wall not too far away from Stubbs.

My favorite photo out of the entire paper is the picture of Kate Stubbs doing her back handspring on the balance beam on page A8. I liked this picture the best because it was captured at the perfect time, and it looks to me like she would've been successful with the flip. Her form looks great and you can see every muscle in her body working hard to make sure she lands perfectly. In this photo, I saw lines and depth of field.

My least favorite photo out of the entire paper is the picture of the protester holding up a sign on page A7. I didn't like this picture that much because almost all of the people in it were cut off from the waist down. I understand the photographer wanted to make the sign be the thing that captured people's attention, but I think it would've had more impact if more people's bodies were in the shot.

If I were a photographer on the staff, I would have wanted to shoot pictures for the cheerleader article. I think it would've been fun because I would've gotten to go to all the football games and capture the cool stunts that the cheerleaders have to do.

If I had to rate the photography in this issue, I would give it a 9/10. I really enjoyed all the photos that had to do with some kind of sport. However, I think some pictures like those from the science fair and the women's rights march could've had a bit more creativity and had more thought put into them.
