Sports Portfolio Evaluation

Runner-ups

a. Alyssa Schukar
b. Overall pictures of an eating disorder journey
c. Dislikes - all pictures of a certain distance, pictures too similar, not enough strong singles
d. Likes - good graphics on some pictures, good story telling
e. Like the judges said, it was an overall "downer" collection, but I got the feeling she liked to take good, deep photos with a lot of meaning.

a. Sam Adams
b. Overall pictures of outdoor activities
c. Dislikes - composition of helicopter photo, some photos need more action, telephone lines in shot
d. Likes - photos have a nice clean look, good sense of mood
e. I think this photographer was trying to get a good variety from where he was shooting, so I like how he was being adventurous and creative with his photos.

a. Carlos Delgado
b. Overall pictures of camping activities
c. Dislikes - "no consideration for backgrounds," too heavy on curves and levels, needs better surroundings with no clutter
d. Likes - good content, good effort
e. I think this photographer took photos that looked mainly rushed and didn't take their time to lay out what they wanted to shoot. Their pictures looked more spontaneous than any of the other people.

a. Daryl Peveto
b. Overall pictures of trips
c. Dislikes - cluttered backgrounds, no reason for photo, no connection between caption and photo
d. Likes - like the balance of color, nice compositions
e. Overall, I think this person was a little too messy with their composition, but I really liked the pictures where he put the end of a wall between the two scenes on either side of it.

Winning Portfolio:

Dustin Snipes -
a. As the judges critiqued his photos, they mentioned that everyone was doing something in the photos (which they liked), and they liked that he gave out his own personality based on what photos he took ("I like this person").
b. I loved the composition that Snipes had, and all of his pictures were clean and cropped well. The judges mentioned a few negative comments such as how they wish some of his photos could start from a lower angle, or they weren't sure about a few items used, but overall, they were very impressed with the outcome.

Contest Recap:

a. One by one, the judges went through the portfolios and named the strong and weak points. If there were too many weak points, the collection is forgotten about and they move on. They came down to two good ones and said they were "comparing apples to oranges because of the two completely different photo topics. They chose the one with the most good photos and least amount of bad comments.

Individual Images:

a. I agree with the judges who liked the sumo wrestler photo. I liked the way it was cropped, just like they said, and it was well balanced. I also really liked the lady's expression which was probably hard to capture.
b. I disagree with the judges on the basketball photo in video 6. They didn't like how the photographer was standing up, but I kind of like it. They said you would usually crouch when you're at a basketball game, but I think the angle he got it at captured the player's expression nicely.
