Illustrator Infographics

HDR Photography Preview

1. You will need to take several pictures by manipulating different shutter speeds and put the pictures together after you've shot all of them.

2. In order to take this kind of picture, you will need a camera, tripod, and HDR photo-blending software.

3. People would take an HDR photo if the scene they're shooting has blown-out highlights and flat shadows. The HDR technique would fix all of these problems.

4. Once we merge the photos, we can expect to see more of a clarity to the photos and much more detail that would've been lost without the HDR technique.

A. The differences between a hard news story and an opinion story is that one is hard facts and the other is just what someone thinks. The hard news probably contains statistics and specific data for a topic, and the opinions one just has quotes on what other people think. Not only do opinion stories not have specific statistics, but they most likely aren't supported by any important companies.

B. There probably aren't very many pictures because the the authors wanted to support their own opinion with a picture of their own. It's hard to come up with a picture to support your opinion.

C. Politics, School issues, and Trending topics

Student of the Month Story

Who: James Heckler
What: Student of the Month Award
When: April 13, 2017
Where: James Bowie High School
Why: To recognize and honor a student
How: Getting good grades and working hard

James Heckler was chosen as the Student of the Month on April 13, 2017. He represented James Bowie High School as an honor role student with great grades. He is recognized by his teachers and students around him as a hardworking, intelligent student.
Heckler has done a lot for his community and serves as a great influence for other students. He was "honored to be in this position" and wants people to know that if you work hard, you can do anything you put your mind to.

Heckler still respects other students even though he was chosen as the Student of the Month.

"I don't worry about anyone else when I'm shooting for high grades, but I'm pretty sure there are more people out there who are more qualified than I am for this position," Heckler says.

People around the school appreciate all Heckler has done.

"He really tries to do the best he can for the school, and everyone around here knows him because he's so involved," leadership president Maria Cacho says.

Heckler looks up to his grandfather and strives to be like him.

"My grandfather is my role model because he was a helicopter pilot, similar to what I want to be," Heckler says. "I enjoy being around and learning from him."

Heckler doesn't really worry about how other people see him.

"I'm not worried about how other people perceive me," Heckler says. "I would hope that people think that I'm a nice, genuine person and that I work hard for what I want."

Heckler's teachers are very proud of his achievements and behavior in class.

"I really enjoy having James in my class," Ms. Jamie Parsons, a biology teacher at Bowie, says. "He treats everyone he knows with respect and I can count on him to be an example for the class."

Many colleges look for the academic performance Heckler turns in.

"Of course I want to go to college," Heckler says. "I have motivated myself to do well and get good grades so I can create a future for myself and live up to my own expectations."

Nut Graf

A nut graf is the paragraph of a story that answers anything that wasn't answered in the intro. The nut graf creates an intro for the story and introduces what is about to be covered. The term refers to information being put "in a nutshell" to summarize a certain story or context in just a few sentences. A good nut graf answers the who, what, when, where, why, and how of a story as quickly as possible to get it out of the way.

A nut graf is important because it easily justifies the main point of the story, and it helps motivate readers to keep reading. It also helps transition a story from the intro into the main body. If not all the information is summed up in the nut graf, it will leave necessary information out and random information might be inserted in later, leaving the reader confused and off track.

Sports Portfolio Evaluation

Runner-ups

a. Alyssa Schukar
b. Overall pictures of an eating disorder journey
c. Dislikes - all pictures of a certain distance, pictures too similar, not enough strong singles
d. Likes - good graphics on some pictures, good story telling
e. Like the judges said, it was an overall "downer" collection, but I got the feeling she liked to take good, deep photos with a lot of meaning.

a. Sam Adams
b. Overall pictures of outdoor activities
c. Dislikes - composition of helicopter photo, some photos need more action, telephone lines in shot
d. Likes - photos have a nice clean look, good sense of mood
e. I think this photographer was trying to get a good variety from where he was shooting, so I like how he was being adventurous and creative with his photos.

a. Carlos Delgado
b. Overall pictures of camping activities
c. Dislikes - "no consideration for backgrounds," too heavy on curves and levels, needs better surroundings with no clutter
d. Likes - good content, good effort
e. I think this photographer took photos that looked mainly rushed and didn't take their time to lay out what they wanted to shoot. Their pictures looked more spontaneous than any of the other people.

a. Daryl Peveto
b. Overall pictures of trips
c. Dislikes - cluttered backgrounds, no reason for photo, no connection between caption and photo
d. Likes - like the balance of color, nice compositions
e. Overall, I think this person was a little too messy with their composition, but I really liked the pictures where he put the end of a wall between the two scenes on either side of it.

Winning Portfolio:

Dustin Snipes -
a. As the judges critiqued his photos, they mentioned that everyone was doing something in the photos (which they liked), and they liked that he gave out his own personality based on what photos he took ("I like this person").
b. I loved the composition that Snipes had, and all of his pictures were clean and cropped well. The judges mentioned a few negative comments such as how they wish some of his photos could start from a lower angle, or they weren't sure about a few items used, but overall, they were very impressed with the outcome.

Contest Recap:

a. One by one, the judges went through the portfolios and named the strong and weak points. If there were too many weak points, the collection is forgotten about and they move on. They came down to two good ones and said they were "comparing apples to oranges because of the two completely different photo topics. They chose the one with the most good photos and least amount of bad comments.

Individual Images:

a. I agree with the judges who liked the sumo wrestler photo. I liked the way it was cropped, just like they said, and it was well balanced. I also really liked the lady's expression which was probably hard to capture.
b. I disagree with the judges on the basketball photo in video 6. They didn't like how the photographer was standing up, but I kind of like it. They said you would usually crouch when you're at a basketball game, but I think the angle he got it at captured the player's expression nicely.
